Curators, Collectors and Festivals - Wells 301

The article “Photography Within the Institution gave a lot of information concerning different display places of photographic artwork. Large well known museums such as the MET, often purchase contemporary artists photographs which in turn, supports photographers. The work that the museums purchase is then put into exhibits, which often times, will be displayed in different locations and galleries if put on tour. Before an exhibition can begin, a curator must determine the artwork that will be displayed. What surprised me, was how much influence the curator has on the exhibition. Often times, the curator has a immense impact on the outcome of the exhibition. Many times, a curator will choose artwork based on their preferences, whether it be the artists, content, or types of work. This has a large impact on contemporary trends, as it is what is being displayed publicly.

International festivals are also another showcase for photographic work. These festivals draw a large number of photographers, both professional and amateur, as well as spectators. These festivals often have a central theme and display professional photographic work as well as less known photographer’s work. The international festivals also offer workshops, lectures, events, and other activities which help develop better photographers as well as give exposure to them.
